The Edge-Core DCS201 5835-54X-O-AC-B is a 1.08T programmable switch that caters to enterprise and cloud data centers high-performance, reliability, and scalability needs, offering full line-rate switching at Layer 2 or 3 with 48 x 10GbE ports and 6 x 100GbE uplinks. Ideal as a Top-of-Rack solution or within a distributed spine, the switch supports VXLAN and NVGRE tunneling functions, and is compatible with the Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) for installing Network Operating System (NOS) software. High-availability features include redundant power supplies, fan modules, and configurable airflow options.

Does this switch come with an NOS or do I have to buy it separately? Can I get SONiC for free?

Answer:

This switch is white box / bare metal, meaning it only have the ONIE bootloader on it, and does not have an NOS pre-installed. You can either purchase a commercial NOS, such as Pica8 or IP Infusion, or you can download the open source SONiC NOS. For SONiC NOS, you have several options; you can either download the free version from the community, or you can download the free hardened version from Edge-Core. The hardened version is recommended since it is programmed / field tested to work on this switch. You can also purchase support from Edge-Core, ensuring you get world class support, same as you would from traditional networking vendors.
