Questions & Answers

Question:

Is SONiC stable enough to run on this platform in production?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

Yes, as long as you're using a commercial SONiC distribution. These versions are validated, hardened, and have support available.

Question:

What’s the telemetry visibility like on this switch?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

You can get access to Redfish APIs, as well as advanced telemetry and monitoring features via the NOS. With SONiC, support for streaming telemetry and gNMI is available depending on the build. The platform also supports packet-level timestamping and congestion diagnostics when enabled in the NOS.

Question:

Can this be used as a leaf switch or is it overkill?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

It depends on your architecture. In AI or HPC clusters, it’s often used as a high-radix leaf, especially if you’re connecting to GPU nodes with 100G/200G links.

Question:

What’s the power draw like for this platform at full load?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

Expect peak consumption to be under 1300W with high-power 800G optics. The DS4101 ships with 1+1 redundant 2000W PSUs and 6+1 fan redundancy for cooling. You’ll want proper airflow and headroom in your rack power budget, especially in high-density deployments.

Question:

Can this switch be used in a GPU cluster environment with RoCEv2?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

Yes, the switch supports congestion management features needed for lossless fabrics, including PFC, ECN, and advanced QoS. With breakout support down to 100G and up to 32 OSFP ports, it integrates cleanly into large-scale GPU clusters using 800G or 400G NICs.
