Question:

Does the DS4001 support SONiC out of the box?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

It comes preloaded with ONIE, so you can install SONiC or any ONIE-compatible NOS. For production environments, we recommend using a commercially supported SONiC distribution that has been validated specifically for the DS4001 platform.

Question:

Does it support out-of-band management and remote upgrades?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

Yes. The DS4001 includes a dedicated BMC with IPMI 2.0, SoL, and remote BIOS/firmware upgrade support. You can manage it like a server.

Question:

Does it support both front-to-back and back-to-front airflow?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

Yes.

Question:

Is this a PHY-less switch?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

Yes.

Question:

Can I run layer 2-only use cases, like MLAG + VLANs?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

Absolutely. The hardware supports all major L2 features including 802.1Q VLANs, QinQ, STP/RSTP/MSTP, and LAG (802.3ad). If you're using SONiC, L2 support depends on the NOS build.

Question:

Can this run in a disaggregated environment with Ansible or other automation tools?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

Yes. Most commercial NOSs running on DS4001 support full automation via gNMI, NETCONF, or REST APIs.

Question:

Can I use the DS4001 in a RoCEv2 fabric?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

Yes, this platform is great for RoCEv2.

Question:

Is the DS4001 fully supported by SONiC?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

Yes, the DS4001 supports SONiC and is ONIE-compliant, meaning you can install any ONIE-compatible NOS, including SONiC. For production environments, we strongly recommend using a commercially supported SONiC distribution, as these provide tested platform drivers, optics support, telemetry integration, and long-term maintenance and support.

Question:

What’s the difference between open-source SONiC and commercial SONiC on this platform?

[email protected]
13-Jul-2025

Answer:

The open-source SONiC community builds are great for labs, development, and proof-of-concept work. However, they may require additional effort to integrate platform-specific drivers for optics, fans, or telemetry. Commercial SONiC distributions come pre-validated for the DS4001 and include full hardware support, enterprise features (like BGP EVPN, MLAG, etc.), and support.
