Question:

Is the SN4600C fully supported with Cumulus Linux, and are there any specific OS features optimized for this switch?

[email protected]
16-Jul-2025

Answer:

Yes, the SN4600C is fully supported by Cumulus Linux. NVIDIA’s integration ensures that the Spectrum-3 ASIC’s advanced features such as VXLAN offload, segment routing, and deep packet inspection are fully leveraged by Cumulus Linux.

Question:

Are there any benefits of running SONiC on this platform?

[email protected]
16-Jul-2025

Answer:

Cumulus Linux offers a full Linux OS experience with extensive scripting and automation capabilities, ideal for teams with Linux networking expertise wanting fine control over network behavior. SONiC provides a modular, container-based NOS architecture focused on cloud-native scalability and rapid feature iteration. Both support the SN4600C’s hardware acceleration, but Cumulus is preferred for environments requiring deep customization, while SONiC excels in hyperscale and rapid deployment scenarios. Note that Cumulus Linux is already pre-loaded on the platform and there is no economic benefit from a Capex perspective to go with SONiC since you would have already paid for the NVIDIA Cumulus Linux licence + support.

Question:

Can the SN4600C handle multi-speed breakout configurations on all ports, and how does Cumulus Linux manage these?

[email protected]
16-Jul-2025

Answer:

Yes, the SN4600C supports breakout configurations, allowing QSFP28 ports to split into multiple lower-speed interfaces such as 50GbE or 25GbE.

Question:

What troubleshooting tools and commands are recommended on the SN4600C w/Cumulus?

[email protected]
16-Jul-2025

Answer:

You can use standard Linux tools (tcpdump, ip, ethtool), Cumulus-specific commands (net show, net add), and NVIDIA telemetry utilities (wjh-cli) for monitoring. You can also integrate with streaming telemetry tools such as Prometheus and Grafana is also recommended for continuous health monitoring.

Question:

Is Onyx still supported on this switch? Also, can I buy it bare metal (without any OS installed)?

[email protected]
16-Jul-2025

Answer:

Onyx is EOL is and is in maintenance mode. The recommended NOS is Cumulus Linux, which is NVIDIA's flagship NOS now. Cumulus Linux comes pre-loaded on the SN4600C, so you unfortunately cannot get it bare metal.

Question:

Does it support segment routing?

[email protected]
16-Jul-2025

Answer:

The Spectrum-3 ASIC used in this switch supports segment routing capabilities at the hardware level, including features like SRv6 and advanced packet parsing. However, segment routing support ultimately depends on the NOS used and its ability to expose those features. We have not tested SR support with Cumulus Linux or SONiC on the Spectrum 3 platform.
